Michelle Merdzan fashion and lifestyle writer for the fantastic website Pushing Fifty tells us about her exciting styling career and her latest TV debut on ‘The Couch’, a segment dedicated to inspiring over 50’s to look fabulous and how not to spend a fortune.

The segment on ‘The Couch’ came along as I was introduced to the host Fred Mafrica back in December. We chatted about my website and I explained to him how I was trying to inspire more women to feel good about themselves. I really wanted to highlight how you don't have to be spending a fortune to look fabulous. Also I know a lot of women approaching 50 struggle with what to wear and what’s appropriate. I just wanted to reassure women to make their own unique style, experiment with different looks and most of all just have fun.

Fred thought this would be a great segment to have on his show and offered me to be part of it from June to November talking about styling and fashion. I have always been a bargain hunter and a lot of my friends are always asking me where I find all these great clothes. To be honest they were really surprised when I mentioned I shopped at Millers as they said they thought Millers was for more mature ladies and they never would have thought to shop there.

After seeing what I have been purchasing I have definitely changed their minds as some said they will be looking in Millers in the future. Too many people worry about what others are thinking of them this is why I suggested on the couch episode that everyone should go to http://advancedstyle.blogspot.com.au to see what this guy from NY is doing, it's very inspiring.

I'm loving doing ‘The Couch’ at the moment and I have had such great support and feedback from friends about what I'm sharing and talking about on the show. It's very relaxed and fun and it helps people get to know my personality as they see the real person behind all the photos.

Carolyn: Work wear

We just loved the leopard print blouse as these are always on trend. It looked fabulous with the black jacket and pants. This work look was simple and stylish but not over the top. Also a comfortable choice for around the office. Again the jacket could be worn with a skirt to give a different look or with a dress.

Michelle: Work wear

I love anything black and white so I chose the patterned shirt and pants which I dressed up with the red accessories. This gave the look a bit of colour and it looked really smart. I think at work your appearance says a lot about you so I always go for a bit more effort than not enough.

Carolyn: Casual

Carolyn just loved the beige leather look jacket. It is very versatile and can be worn with pants, jeans or even over a dress depending on what type of look you’re going for. The top that Carolyn chose with the heart motive had some gold in it which really picked up the colours of the jacket. This just looked really fab for a casual look.

Michelle: casual

I was so happy to find the black quilted jacket that zipped up. I really feel the cold in winter so this was perfect. Not only was it super warm but it looked great, I teamed it up with the denim leggings which again are just great. These are the best ones I have found yet. They are really comfortable, warm and they are a good quality fabric. I also chose the Turtle neck jumper which was gorgeous in the off white colour. It really went well with my jacket and leggings and I still felt dressed up even though it was pretty casual.

Carolyn: evening

This gorgeous dress just stood out with its pop of colour. At first Carolyn was not sure about it with her blonde hair and fair skin but it was absolutely stunning. We have had so much feedback about this dress and jacket already. It would be great as an evening out for dinner or dressy enough to wear to a wedding. Overall this was our pick of the bunch we both loved it.

Michelle: evening

I chose the striped throw because I absolutely love these. I have a couple of others from Millers too. I couldn't resist in dressing this up to give it a real glamorous feel. It looks super stylish with the black and gold clutch and the beautiful accessories. It just goes to show you can dress most things up or down.

A visit to the Botanical Gardens with family and friends is a wonderful way to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. It’s also a great venue to host a family picnic, go on walking adventures with the little ones and to be inspired! It was no easy task, but we’ve managed to round up our favourite botanical gardens that we think are worth visiting at least once!

Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney NSW

Gorgeous views of Sydney Harbour.

Views here, there and everywhere! Enjoy jaw-dropping views of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and the big city. If you don't want to walk, or haven't got time to walk, there is a little train that takes you around (there is a charge though).

Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Hobart TAS

Any season is a good season to visit this outstanding garden! But, we have to admit that Spring is the pick! During Spring there are amazing tulip displays sure to inspire the green thumb in all of us. It’s kid friendly and has loads of areas for kids to play and explore. If you haven’t packed your own picnic; there's a lovely restaurant to dine at. They served all our favs like hot tea and simple sandwiches.

Adelaide Botanic Garden, SA

Beautiful views of The Palm House.

If you are a gardening goddess and happen to be in Adelaide this one is definitely worth a visit. The garden is not too far from the CBD so it’s an easy train and walk. There is a guided tour every morning at 10:30, which we think is a great time to go because the weather is not too warm. On a hot day it’s the best way to escape from the heat in the city.

Royal Botanical Garden, Cranbourne VIC

Don't forget your camera! This is worth several visits because there are so many hidden corners to explore. There’s plenty of parking and no entry fee so it’s the perfect place to visit with lots of friends and family.

Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt. Coot-tha QLD

You’ll certainly be spoiled for choice when it comes to finding a special picnic area. The 56 hectare gardens feature more than 20,000 plants from around the world. The gardens are stunning and are incredibly well groomed… (If only we all had our own personal groundskeepers). For those who love their bonsais, make sure you take time to see their bonsai collections.

Kings Park and Botanic Garden, WA

Enjoying the stunning weather in Western Australia.

Enjoy stunning views of the Perth skyline as you meander through the garden. On a lazy Sunday afternoon it’s a beautiful place to sit and read. Getting there won’t hurt the wallet because it's within the CBD free transit zone on the CAT BUS. That means you can hop on and off for free.

The Beautiful Blue Mountains

Did you know the Blue Mountains is blue because of all the Eucalyptus trees? The atmosphere is so rich in eucalyptus that it turns the particles in the air blue!

Last week, in the spirit of our Everyday Blues collection, we visited the Blue Mountains!
The Blue Mountains is only a 2 hour train trip from Sydney and is popular for sightseeing. Around this time of year, it is cold! So, if you are thinking about a visit, make sure you rug up in a big warm jacket, and have plenty of layers underneath.
Sight-seeing, tea and coffee, shopping were high on our list of things to do. After a 2 hour commute, tea and coffee was our biggest priority!

Afternoon tea and shopping in Leura

We had a wonderful time there! We walked up and down the street and popped in and out of cute little antique shops. We also had the most scrumptious hot chocolate at a place called Josephine’s. After we had our fill of tea and coffee, it was time to go sight-seeing!

Three Sisters, Katoomba

You really can’t go to the Blue Mountains without visiting The Three Sisters! But be warned it can be incredibly windy this time of the year. Make sure you rug up! I wore my micro-fleece jacket and layered on a puffer vest to break the wind. I was zipped all the way up to keep my neck protected from the cold winds.

Jurassic Rainforest, Katoomba

To visit this famous rainforest, we were posed with two options; a laborious and very steep walk south or a thrilling 52 degree incline train ride that would get us there in 10 minutes. We chose the latter! The train ride took us through a cliff-side tunnel and we got off at the ancient rainforest. The air was unbelievable fresh, the flora and fauna flourished. It was fantastically peaceful and when you listened carefully you could hear the birds whistling.

Charles Darwin walk, Wentworth Falls

The Charles Darwin walk is an easy stroll that’s roughly a 3.5km loop. The main attraction is its magical waterfalls. Knowing that I was about to get my heart rate up, I decided to peel back the layers and leave my micro-fleece jacket in the car and wear my vest in its place. A vest is great for going on light walks because it keeps your core warm and your arms free to move.

Millers Denim

“Iconic” is how I describe Denim, not just in the fashion world but as a global, cultural statement. From cowboys to Punk Rockers, Denim has certainly evolved through the decades. Originating in the Middle Ages in Nîmes France, a cotton fabric worn purely for durability, originally named serge de Nîmes, later shortened to “Denim”. The history and transformation of Denim leads us on a very interesting and colourful journey through the years.

DENIM THROUGH THE DECADES:

1920’s-1930’s: The working man’s material. Denim was worn by miners and cowboys as it was a strong durable fabric, perfect for harsh conditions.

1950’s: “The Rebel”, Denim Jeans and jackets were made famous by Marlon Brando and James Dean, making it very popular with teenagers of the time.

1960s-1970’s: It was all about embellishment, embroidery, rhinestones and patchwork, and of course high waisted flares were all the rage.

1980’s: Lets take a perfectly good pair of jeans and attack them. This decade was all about distressing denim to make it look as worn and aged as possible. Stonewash, acid wash and ripped jeans were all the go with many people getting out the scissors and creating their own looks.

1990’s: Bib n’brace overalls were on trend and loose fitting baggy jeans worn low on the hips, the start of the trend of men’s boxer shorts being exposed on their waist.

2000 till today: Now there is a style name and colour for every type of denim jean, The boyfriend, the bootleg, skinny leg, straight leg, relaxed fit, high rise, low rise, coloured and printed denim.

Last week we met Wendy at our Hurstville store. Looking fabulous and dressed head-to-toe in Millers we knew we’d have a lot in common. Wendy is no stranger to Millers, in fact she’s been a devoted customer for nearly two decades. A true fashionista through-and-through! She even remembers the days when we use to sell men’s fashion. Just ask her husband, he’s still got the cargoes to prove it!

Today on the blog, we spend some time getting to know the lovely and very modest, Wendy.

Meet the lovely Wendy.

Have you always loved fashion?

Yes!

I use to work in fashion at Anthony Hordern & Sons. I was one of the youngest assistant buyers for the lingerie department! To keep up with my love for fashion, I would layby the things I loved until I could afford to buy them.

These days, I enjoy visiting Millers because they always have new and exciting items at reasonable prices. I know my clothes and know that there are brands who charge people top dollar for the exact same quality you can expect from Millers.

I love the fashion at Millers because I know I am getting the best value for me. I’ve got so many Millers items I’ve had to start taking over my son’s old wardrobe (he’s moved out… for now).

It’s Winter right now, how do you shake off the Winter Blues?

Shop! Every Thursday my husband and I will go shopping. We start at Hurstville for groceries and I will always make sure I pop in to see if there is something I like. Then, we go to East Gate! That’s when I’ll have another browse to see if there is anything else I want. My husband is so use to this and knows that one visit will quickly turn into two some days!

What’s your trick to feeling fabulous?

Now that I am retired, I am able to enjoy a little more socialising. My son introduced my husband and I to the world of cruises and ever since then we treat ourselves to one cruise every year.

On my last cruise, my dear friend and I both brought the same black sequined top from Millers. We both loved the top and joked about who got to wear it when.

I also love seeing friends for lunch and pottering around the home, you could say I’m a bit of a home body!

We’re also members of our local Probus club. It’s a club where we have monthly meet-ups with lots of activities. The last one I went on was a “Mystery Tour”. All you had to do was buy a $2.50 train ticket and meet everyone at a certain time. You’d be amazed by how far you can go.

The best part of that trip was trying to guess with your friends where you are going. It’s a lot of fun and we always end up somewhere nice for lunch. You’d be surprised by the many wonderful places you never knew existing. We also meet up for diners too! That’s when I can wear my latest Millers outfit.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Never spend out of your means. Mum has always taught me to save. Don’t leave everything to the last minute.

The fragrant world of Herbal Teas

I have always been a tea drinker, strictly black leaf tea with milk, but recently I have noticed a lot of my work colleagues drinking an array of fragrant herbal teas. The exotic aromas and unique spices had me intrigued so I decided to ask around in the office to discover what everyone was drinking and why? I walked around with a notepad and jotted down the responses to my questions:
“What herbal tea do you drink and why?”

Why not try something new?

The responses were varied, the reasons behind drinking a specific tea were a combination of simply enjoying the flavour and/or therapeutic reasons. After researching the benefits of Herbal tea I discovered these interesting facts;

Sleepless nights > Chamomile

Common cold > Elderflower

Stressed > Lemon Balm

Slow metabolism > Green Tea

Nauseous > Ginger tea

Bloated > Peppermint tea

Eden, who is a Herbal Tea enthusiast, suggested I visit a Tea shop so on her advice I did exactly that and I now I have a new favourite shop to visit.

My Tea shop Experience

There is something different for everyone.

As soon as I took a step inside my local Tea shop I was taken aback, it had such an amazing ambiance. There was so much to take in, the smells, the colours, the vast amount of tea varieties, tea sets and every little gadget you could think of related to tea. A lovely sales assistant, showed me around, I tried some freshly brewed chai tea and then went about exploring by myself. With every new tea tin I opened a new aroma came wafting out. I finally decided on a delicious vanilla mint tea and a Ginger Spice Black tea. I also purchased a tea strainer and 2 lovely oriental tea canisters to keep my tea leaves airtight.

So next time you visit local shopping centre or grocery store try something different and pick up a delicious herbal tea. There are so many varieties and flavours too choose from. Teas to lift you up, calm you down, teas for all occasions, so enjoy!!

Here we give you the 'Millers Guide' on how to wear a pair of jeans comfortably and still look stylish at the same time. Once you have found your perfect pair, they become a timeless piece in your everyday style. They will carry you throughout all the seasons and are the perfect base for both casual and smart looks.

A wardrobe essential is the regular straight leg jean in dark blue. They really are the perfect go-to jean for casual days or even for the more dressy occasions. You can team this with a cotton shirt, a jersey top or even a smarter option, as everything looks great with these straight leg jeans. You can comfortably wear heels, flats or sneakers with this regular straight jean as most shoes will compliment this jean style.
